Amelia's Magazine 10th Anniversary submission

This was an illustration I created for a brief for 'Amelia's Magazine'. It is based on 'That which we do not understand'- Spooky

For this brief I was instantly drawn to Voodoo. I am fascinated by the culture and vibrant nature of the religion. My piece is focused around the magic of voodoo and the tribal characteristics of its history. I personally love the tribal patterns and mark making which is shown on voodoo Queens and priestesses. Their clothes are highly decorated with colours and different textures such as wood, plantation, feathers, paints, beads and much more. These patterns have heavily inspired my own illustration and it shows the burst of high spiritual energy that Voodoo exudes.

Concept art

Recently i have been trying to create concept art and so these images are my recreations of already existing art. It has really helped me understand the importance of layering and what brushes give the desired effect.      Its going well, so far...

Study of One of the most interesting Villains ever created - The Joker Study

Study of the joker was created on Photoshop using a tablet. It took a few days to create the first one as a result of the shading and detail. Decided to then mess around with the colour and geometry of the piece and was very pleased with the turn out. This may have now sparked a new interesting style and technique for me...

My own Short dramatic film - Rotoscope Animation

My Short Animation with the soundtrack of Johnny Cash's 'When the man comes around' (I own no rights to the music but had to use it for a uni project) it's a beautiful song. The quality would be HD if Youtube let me upload it.

Tropical Piece

Found this in my study, it's a piece i did for my A levels but i can't remember what the brief was...

Editorial Work

Editorial pieces for a Film festival, the Kids magazine 'ANORAK', And for a problem's page. These are all briefs set in my illustration lectures. Had a lot of fun doing these:
  • Loved combining the western themes of the south and bluegrass for the 'o brother where art thou?' piece.
  • Managed to do the 'ANORAK' cover in one of my favourite art styles. A 1930's Clairvoyant fair ground theme mixed with a Film Noir style go perfectly together to create the perfect mystery cover for 'Myths and tales'. ( If i do say so myself ;)  )
  • The last piece Conveys my editorial response to a brief regarding the following statement: 'My girlfriend is sending naked photos of herself to another man'. The high heeled shoes represent passion and sexual promiscuity. They also show a lot of dominance and power as the focus is on the shoes and the underwear. The green simply mirrors envy and jealousy. The red thong again highlights sexual desires and a probable strong sense of confidence.
  • Love doing editorials!

Graphic Novel Project

My short graphic novel of a tragic tale of Love and jealously.
There is a clear contrast between the childlike typography with the simple narrative and the dark sombre tone of the novel and the images. This juxtaposition speaks for itself as a picture says 1000 words.

Illustrations of the Human Condition

Greed. Religion. War. Manipulation. Temptation.

This project was about 'Monsters' in this world and what effects humans.
The images reflect my own opinions and experiences on delicate subjects. Most of the focus was on the power the media have over the public and particularly on young and impressionable people.
The first image depicts Greed and fame. You rise to the top and expose yourself to everyone and then EVERYONE wants a piece of you.
The second image reflects my experiences on religion, much importance is placed on the christian faith but the main focus of religion is to do good and spread kindness. And so they're all connected with the same message of love. But the ghostly figure surrounded by these different faiths represents the hatred and discrimination against religions, agnosticism and atheism.
The third image reflects War. It's unnecessary and no one wants to be a part of it, yet we are still bound by higher powers and the urge to be dominant. This image shows the desire to break away from violence and say no to war.
The last image is about the power the media has over the younger generation. The media consumes people, manipulates their thoughts and molds their opinions.

The media has great power and with great power comes great responsibility...
